The Volcano
THE VOLCANO
The Volcano of Santorini is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world. It has shaped the current morphology of the island and it has even been correlated with the legendary Atlantis.
Santorini used to be called Strogili and it was much larger than it is today. However, the volcanic activity led to the formation of five different islands: Santorini, Therasia, Aspronisi which remains uninhabited, Palaia Kameni and Nea Kameni. This is why all these islands can be found in close proximity to one another and thus, a visit here gives you the perfect opportunity to go on a boating tour to explore them.
The volcanic eruptions have also created one of the most popular attractions on the island: the Caldera, which amazes all visitors with its distinctive landscape. Of course, the Volcano has greatly influenced the geology and a great example of this is the Black Beach with its black sand and pebbles, and the Red Beach. These two amazing beaches are bound to captivate you with their special morphological features that have formed after numerous volcanic eruptions.
So, if you’ve picked Santorini as your next holiday retreat, make sure that you admire the volcanic scenery and watch the crater and black lava rocks from up close.
